Discover more about Torre Cala di Forno

Torre Cala di Forno, a coastal tower in the municipality of Magliano in Toscana, stands on a promontory of the Uccellina Mountains, overlooking the small beach of Cala di Forno. This strategic location within the Maremma Natural Park made it an integral part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany's defensive network. Originally built in the Medieval era as a lookout post against Saracen incursions, the tower suffered damage over the years. In the second half of the 16th century, the Medici family initiated a reconstruction project to create an uninterrupted defensive system along the Maremma coast, which was frequently targeted by pirates. The tower's construction is believed to have started around 1543, following the kidnapping of Margherita Marsili by pirates. From its summit, guards could communicate with the Tower of Uccellina to the south and the Tower of Collelungo to the north, relaying warnings of potential threats. The tower itself rests on a base and is built on multiple levels. The entrance, located on the mezzanine, was once accessible via a staircase with a drawbridge. Although the upper part of the tower is partially damaged due to past neglect, it remains a striking landmark. Today, Cala di Forno is a tranquil spot frequented by wildlife, offering visitors a chance to experience the unspoiled beauty of the Maremma coast.
