Discover more about The Gathering of the Waters

The Gathering of the Waters (La Raccolta delle Acque) offers an immersive journey into Matera's ancient water management techniques. This museum and tourist attraction unveils the complex system of cisterns, channels, and reservoirs that sustained the city's population for centuries. Matera, built atop a ravine, faced unique challenges in securing a consistent water supply. Visitors can explore the underground chambers and learn about the innovative engineering solutions developed by early dwellers. The largest cistern, Palombaro Lungo, is located under Piazza Vittorio Veneto and is so vast that it's been called a subterranean water cathedral. The walls of the cisterns were lined with cocciopesto, a waterproof material made from terracotta shards. The rainwater harvesting system is one of the reasons why Matera was selected as a World Heritage Site. Locals collected rainwater in cisterns and used gravity to distribute it throughout the city. The central cistern, standing 15 meters high, is a highlight, accessible via stairs and walkways.
