Discover more about Basilica of San Simpliciano

The Basilica of San Simpliciano, located on Piazza San Simpliciano, is a captivating historical site in Milan. Founded in the 4th century by St. Ambrose, it's one of the four basilicas he sought to build around the periphery of the city. Originally named Basilica Virginum, it was later dedicated to St. Simplician, who succeeded Ambrose as bishop. The basilica's brick facade reflects Romanesque architecture. Inside, a small door to the left of the apse leads to the 5th-century chapel of San Simpliciano, where the remains of the martyrs Sisinio, Martirio, and Alessandro are preserved. Legend links these saints to the victory at the Battle of Legnano in 1176, where it's said that three doves flew from the church and rested on the Carroccio (war altar) until the battle's end. Over the centuries, the basilica has undergone several modifications. The bell tower was lowered in the 16th century, and the facade was reworked in 1870. Despite these changes, the basilica remains one of Milan's best-preserved early Christian monuments. The interior features a Latin cross plan with a nave and two aisles. The apse showcases a fresco of the Coronation of the Virgin by Ambrogio Bergognone.
