Discover more about Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano

The Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano, founded in 1387 by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, is the historic institution dedicated to the construction and ongoing care of Milan's iconic Duomo. Originally established to oversee the cathedral's construction, the Fabbrica (meaning 'factory' or 'workshop') has evolved over six centuries to encompass all aspects of the Duomo's life, from its physical structure to its cultural significance. The Fabbrica manages diverse operational sectors, welcoming millions of tourists and worshippers annually. These sectors include the Candoglia marble quarries, the restoration sites, the Duomo Museum, the Archives/Library, and the Music Chapel. The Candoglia marble, used for the entire Duomo, is extracted, cut, and shaped by specialist workers before arriving at the marble yard for detailed work. The marble workshop crafts architectural elements, decorations, and sculptures, which are then installed on the Duomo. The Fabbrica's work extends to restoring and conserving stonework, updating technological systems, and positioning decorations. The Archives/Library contain materials providing a complete overview of the Duomo's history and that of Milan. The organization also promotes cultural activities and provides services for the Cathedral's religious activities.
