Discover more about Ponte sulla Sieve

Spanning the Sieve River, the Ponte Mediceo stands as a testament to Renaissance engineering and a vital link connecting Pontassieve with San Francesco di Pelago. Built in the mid-1500s, the bridge replaced an earlier stone structure destroyed by a flood in 1547. Cosimo I de' Medici commissioned Stefano di San Piero a Ponti and his son Tommaso to construct the new bridge, possibly based on a design by Bartolomeo Ammannati. Its purpose was to improve connections between Florence and the regions of Mugello, Casentino and Arezzo. The bridge features two red brick arches supported by a robust central stone pillar, adorned with the Medici family coat of arms. It has undergone restoration twice, once in 1788 and again after damage sustained during World War II. Today, the Ponte Mediceo is open to both pedestrian and single-lane vehicle traffic heading towards San Francesco. Walking across the stone-paved bridge offers a unique experience, blending history with the beauty of the surrounding Tuscan scenery. The bridge also serves as part of the Via di Francesco pilgrimage trail.
