Discover more about Rocca Albornoziana, Orvieto

Perched atop Orvieto, the Rocca Albornoziana is a historic fortress offering visitors a blend of history, stunning views, and serene gardens. Constructed in 1364 by Cardinal Egidio Albornoz, under the order of Pope Innocent VI, the fortress was originally intended to reinforce the Papal States' control over central Italy. The site where the Rocca stands today was once an Etruscan temple. Over the centuries, the fortress underwent several transformations. It was destroyed in 1390 during internal conflicts and rebuilt in 1450. In 1527, Pope Clement VII commissioned the construction of the Pozzo di San Patrizio (St. Patrick's Well) to ensure a water supply for the city and the fortress. The fortress gradually lost its military significance, and in 1841, an amphitheater was built within its walls for public events. The funeral honors for Giuseppe Garibaldi were held here in 1882. Today, the Rocca Albornoziana functions as a public park where visitors can explore the grounds, enjoy the shaded gardens, and admire the views of the Orvieto valley. From its walls, you can see the rolling hills and the valley of the Paglia River. The park also features bronze sculptures by contemporary American artist Jack Zajac.
