Discover more about Galleria San Ludovico

Galleria San Ludovico is an art gallery housed in the deconsecrated wing of the former Church of San Ludovico, situated in the heart of Parma. The gallery is located on the ancient cardo of the Roman city. The church, originally named San Paolo, was built around the end of the 10th century as a chapel for the Benedictine abbey founded by Bishop Sigefredo II in 983. Initially Romanesque, it was rebuilt in neoclassical style between the 18th and 19th centuries by architects Antonio and Niccolò Bettoli. After the monastery's suppression in 1810, Duchess Maria Luigia transformed it into a Ducal Chapel in 1817, dedicating it to San Ludovico. With the end of the Duchy, the chapel was deconsecrated in 1860 and closed. For many years, it was used as office space before being repurposed as an exhibition space for temporary art shows and cultural events by the City of Parma. Visitors can experience contemporary art in a unique setting, with past exhibitions featuring artists like Emanuele Giannelli and Sergio Cavazzini. The gallery also displayed a collection of satirical comics. The architectural design, resembling a classic church, creates a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.
