Getting There

  • Car

    From Buzen, head northwest on Route 10 towards Fukuoka. After about 50 kilometers, merge onto the Kyushu Expressway heading towards Kumamoto. Continue for approximately 120 kilometers, then take the exit toward Kizu and merge onto Route 1. Follow signs to Kyoto. Once in Kyoto, follow signs to Arashiyama, which will take you through city streets. The Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is located at Sagaogurayama Tabuchiyamacho, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto. Note that parking is limited, and there may be a parking fee.

  • Train

    From Buzen City, head to the nearest train station, which is Buzen-Takada Station. Take a local train toward Fukuoka and transfer at Hakata Station to the Shinkansen (bullet train) bound for Kyoto. The Shinkansen ride will take about 2 hours. Upon arriving at Kyoto Station, transfer to the JR Sanin Line and take the train to Saga-Arashiyama Station, which is a short walk from the entrance to the Bamboo Forest. This journey may cost around 5,000 yen total, depending on the train class and time of travel.

  • Bus

    From Buzen, take a local bus to Fukuoka and then transfer to a highway bus headed for Kyoto. The journey will take about 3 hours. Once you arrive at Kyoto Station, you can take a local bus (Bus number 28) directly to the Arashiyama area. The bus ride from Kyoto Station to Arashiyama will take approximately 30 minutes. The total cost for this option will be around 3,000 yen.
