Ochozu Falls, located on the outskirts of Tosu City in Saga Prefecture, is a natural haven steeped in history and tranquility. For over 500 years, mountaineers and hikers have recognized it as a sacred place for ritual cleansing. The name 'Ochozu' itself is derived from the washbasins found at shrines, where visitors purify themselves before entering.The falls, though not the highest in Kyushu at only 22 meters, are set within a relaxing and easily accessible natural environment. The surrounding hiking trail is an easy, scenic walk through the woods, making it ideal for families. Along the way, hikers can enjoy the diverse flora and fauna, including ferns, moss, mushrooms, and river crabs.According to local lore, the falls originated when a revered Japanese monk struck a rock with his cane, causing water to flow and form the cascade. The area is also considered a place of mystical energy, adding to its allure. Nearby, there is a temple dedicated to the god of eyes and a 'miracle stone,' a large rock that fell from the cliff without damaging the temple.
