    Discover more about Sengan-en

Sengan-en, also known as Isoteien, is a Japanese-style landscape garden constructed in 1658 by the Shimazu Clan, who ruled the Satsuma domain (present-day Kagoshima) for almost 700 years. The garden is located along the coast north of downtown Kagoshima. One of Sengan-en's most striking features is its incorporation of Sakurajima and Kagoshima Bay as 'borrowed scenery'. The garden covers 50,000 square meters and includes ponds, streams, shrines, a bamboo grove, and a mountain hiking trail. At the center of the garden stands the Iso Residence, which was reconstructed in the mid-1880s. After the end of the feudal age, the Iso Residence became the main residence of the Shimazu family, and its rooms are preserved as they were used in the 1890s. Visitors can explore the interior of the residence. The gardens also feature a cat shrine where visitors can inscribe wishes for their feline friends.Sengan-en played a role in Japan's modernization. The Shuseikan Industrial Complex was constructed on the grounds as part of early efforts to produce iron for shipbuilding and casting cannons. Some surviving structures, foundations, and auxiliary sites have received World Heritage status. The Shoko Shuseikan Museum, housed in Japan's oldest remaining stone factory, showcases the Shimazu clan's efforts to modernize and industrialize their domain.Sengan-en boasts beautiful blooms in each of the four seasons, including cherry trees that bloom from late January to mid-April. The garden was recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 2015.
