Ryuokyo Canyon, a dramatic natural wonder in Nikko National Park, stretches for approximately 3 kilometers between Kinugawa Onsen and Kawaji Onsen. Formed over 22 million years ago by underwater volcanic activity and subsequent erosion by the Kinugawa River, the canyon presents a mesmerizing landscape of rugged cliffs, unique rock formations, and vibrant seasonal colors. The name Ryuokyo, translating to 'Dragon King Gorge,' was given in 1950 because the canyon's winding path mirrors the image of an ascending dragon. The area is divided into three distinct geological sections: Hakuryu Ravine with white rhyolite, Seiryu Ravine with green tuff, and Shiryukyo Ravine with purplish andesite.A nature trail meanders through the gorge, offering hikers breathtaking views of Nijimi Falls, where rainbows often appear on sunny days, and the curiously shaped Kame-ana (Turtle Hole). The Musasabi Bridge, about 1 km from Ryuokyo Station, is a highlight, providing panoramic views of the canyon. Goryuo Shrine, dedicated to the dragon god, stands on a rock promontory near Nijimi Falls. The canyon is particularly beautiful in the fall when the foliage turns vibrant shades of red and gold.
