Discover more about Kannonzaki Lighthouse

Kannonzaki Lighthouse, situated on Cape Kannon at the edge of the Miura Peninsula in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, holds the distinction of being Japan's first Western-style lighthouse. Its construction was stipulated by the Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Amity and Commerce of 1858, marking a significant step in opening Japan to foreign trade and modernizing its navigational infrastructure. The original lighthouse, designed by French engineer François Léonce Verny, was first lit in 1869. Built of brick, it was unfortunately vulnerable to earthquakes and was destroyed in 1922. Rebuilt in reinforced concrete, it suffered further damage in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The current lighthouse, the third iteration, was completed in 1925. Today, the Kannonzaki Lighthouse stands as a symbol of maritime history and offers visitors stunning views of Tokyo Bay and the Boso Peninsula. The lighthouse features a small museum displaying historical artifacts and maps. Visitors can climb the narrow, corkscrew stairs to the observation platform for a spectacular view. Kannonzaki is also part of Kannonzaki Park, which offers trails, beaches, and other attractions.
