Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Kyoto Station, take the JR Sagano Line (also known as the JR Sanin Line) to Saga-Arashiyama Station. The one-way trip takes about 15 minutes and costs ¥240. From Saga-Arashiyama Station, it is a 5-10 minute walk to the central Arashiyama area, including the Bamboo Grove and Tenryu-ji Temple. Alternatively, from central Kyoto, take the Hankyu Line to Katsura Station and transfer to the Hankyu Arashiyama Line for Arashiyama Station. This takes about 20 minutes and costs ¥240. Hankyu Arashiyama Station is a 5-10 minute walk from central Arashiyama. Kyoto City Bus #28 also runs from Kyoto Station to Arashiyama (Arashiyama-Tenryuji-mae stop) in approximately 30 minutes. The fare is ¥230.

  • Walking

    From the Keifuku Arashiyama Station, Tenryu-ji Temple is a short walk away. Exiting the north gate of Tenryu-ji Temple will lead directly into the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. To reach Iwatayama Monkey Park, cross the Togetsukyo Bridge and follow the signs to the park entrance at the base of Mt. Iwatayama. Be prepared for a 20-30 minute uphill hike to reach the monkey park.

  • Taxi

    A taxi from downtown Kyoto to Arashiyama takes approximately 25 minutes and costs around ¥2000. Taxis can drop you off near the Togetsukyo Bridge or at the entrance to Tenryu-ji Temple, providing convenient access to the main attractions. However, note that traffic can be heavy, especially during peak seasons.
