From JR Shimizu Station, take the Shizutetsu bus towards Shizuoka City and get off at the 'Zo' bus stop, which is a short walk to Ryugenji Temple. Bus fares typically cost around ¥200-¥300 for a short trip within the city. From there, follow local signs to the temple.

From Zo Station, Ryugenji Temple is approximately a 10-minute walk. Head east, then turn left onto the main road. Turn right at the next intersection, and the temple entrance will be on your left. There are no tolls or parking fees associated with walking.

Ryugenji Temple, nestled in Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka, provides a tranquil retreat from the bustle of city life. Founded by Dogen Zenji (1200-1253), who introduced the practice of Shikantaza (Just Sitting Zen) to Japan, the temple has a rich history, serving as a family temple for both the Uteji and Ikoma clans. Originally established as the family temple for the Uteji clan in 1623, Ryugenji later became the family temple for the Ikoma clan in 1640. The temple has faced numerous challenges throughout its history, including fires up until the Meiji era and complete destruction during the Boshin War in 1868. Despite these setbacks, Ryugenji has been rebuilt and restored over time, with ongoing reconstruction efforts to this day. In 2004, the Main Hall, with its thatched roof, was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan. Visitors can explore the temple grounds, taking in the traditional Japanese architecture and serene atmosphere. Though specific details about the temple's interior and gardens are limited, the temple's history and connection to Zen Buddhism offer a unique cultural experience.
