Discover more about Nezumita-mon Gate

Nezumita-mon Gate is a captivating historical landmark within the Kanazawa Castle complex. Reconstructed in 2020, the gate and its accompanying bridge offer visitors a tangible connection to Kanazawa's Edo period. The name 'Nezumi' (meaning 'mouse') is said to derive from the gate's location facing the direction of Mt. Nezumi, or from its small, mouse-hole like entrance. Located on the west side of Kanazawa Castle, near Oyama Shrine, the Nezumita-mon Gate stands out with its distinctive *namako* walls, featuring raised black plaster joining the rectangular tiles. This unique design distinguishes it from other gates in the castle grounds. The gate once connected the Gyokusen'inmaru area of the castle to the Kanaya Demaru area, where Oyama Shrine is located today. Historically, the gate was first built in the early 17th century but was destroyed by fire in 1884. The Nezumitamon Bridge, an essential part of the gate's function, was also lost, having been dismantled in 1877 due to age. Painstakingly rebuilt using traditional methods and materials, the current gate and bridge stand as testaments to the architectural prowess of the past. The reconstruction, which began in 2014 with archaeological investigations, ensures the gate meets modern safety standards while preserving its historical accuracy. Visitors can explore the upper floors of the gate free of charge and view displays detailing its history and construction. The surrounding Kanazawa Castle Park offers a serene environment with lush gardens, making it an ideal spot for photography and historical immersion.
