Car
From Kai, take the Chuo Expressway (中央自動車道) heading south. Continue on the expressway for about 1.5 hours until you reach the Nagasaki Expressway (長崎自動車道) interchange. Merge onto the Nagasaki Expressway and follow the signs for Unzen. Exit at the Unzen interchange and follow Route 57 to Obamacho Unzen. The total drive will take approximately 2.5 hours, and be prepared for toll fees on the expressways, which can cost around ¥2,000-¥3,000.

Start your journey from Kai by taking a train to Nagoya. Board the JR Chuo Line (中央本線) from Kai Station (甲府駅) to Nagoya Station (名古屋駅), which takes about 1.5 hours. From Nagoya, transfer to the Limited Express train heading towards Isahaya (諫早行き). Once you arrive at Isahaya Station, transfer to a bus heading to Unzen (雲仙). The bus ride will take about 1 hour. Be aware that the total travel time can take around 4-5 hours, and the total cost for train and bus tickets can range from ¥5,000-¥8,000.
