    Getting There

    Walking

    From Himeji Station (Central Ticket Gate, North Exit), Himeji Castle is approximately a 15-20 minute walk. Exit the station and walk north on Otemae-dori Street. The castle will be visible in the distance. The entrance to the castle grounds is through the Otemon Gate. No costs are involved for the final approach by walking.

    Public Transport

    From Himeji Station (North Exit), take the Shinki Bus to Himeji Castle. The bus ride takes approximately 5 minutes to the 'Himeji-jo Otemon-mae' bus stop. From the bus stop, it is a five-minute walk to the castle entrance. The fare is approximately ¥210.

    Taxi

    From Himeji Station, a taxi ride to Himeji Castle takes approximately 3 minutes. Taxis are readily available at the station. The estimated cost is between ¥1400 and ¥1800.

    Wear comfortable shoes, as exploring the castle involves a lot of walking and climbing steep stairs.

    Himeji Castle, a designated National Treasure and a UNESCO World Heritage site, stands as Japan's most iconic and well-preserved feudal castle. Often called 'White Heron Castle' (Shirasagijo) because of its brilliant white exterior, the castle complex comprises over 80 buildings connected by a network of gates and winding paths designed to confuse attackers.The castle's history dates back to 1333 when Akamatsu Norimura first fortified Himeyama hill. Toyotomi Hideyoshi added a three-story keep in 1581. From 1601 to 1609, Ikeda Terumasa completely rebuilt and expanded the castle, creating the complex seen today. Himeji Castle has withstood the test of time, surviving wars, earthquakes, and fires, making it one of the twelve original castles remaining in Japan.Visitors can explore the castle grounds, enter the main keep, and climb to the top for panoramic city views. The castle exemplifies Japanese castle construction with its intricate defensive systems and graceful design. The castle is also a popular cherry blossom viewing spot in early April.
