Discover more about Japanese Geodetic Origin Point

Nestled in Tokyo's bustling Chiyoda City, the Japanese Geodetic Origin Point stands as a testament to the nation's commitment to accuracy in mapping and surveying. This unassuming site serves as the starting point for all geodetic measurements across Japan, making it a crucial reference point for the country's infrastructure and development. The origin point was initially established at the Tokyo Naval Observatory and later moved to the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory. The position of the meridian circle of the former Tokyo Astronomical Observatory was displaced by about one meter because of the crustal movement caused by the Kanto Earthquake in 1923. In 2002, revisions were made to the Survey Act, and space geodetic techniques were used to establish new longitude and latitude coordinates. While the average tourist might not immediately recognize its significance, the Geodetic Origin Point offers a unique glimpse into Japan's scientific and technological history. The site is marked by a monument that attracts visitors interested in witnessing the foundation of the nation's geographical measurements. Surrounded by the vibrant atmosphere of Tokyo, the area provides a peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle.
