Discover more about Sensōji Chingodō

Nestled within the bustling grounds of Sensōji Temple, Sensōji Chingodō offers a tranquil escape and a unique cultural experience. This small Shinto shrine is dedicated to the tanuki, a raccoon dog revered in Japanese folklore as a mischievous yet benevolent creature. Known sometimes as Otanuki-sama (Honorable Mr. Tanuki), the shrine provides insight into the fascinating world of Japanese spiritual beliefs. According to local legend, the abbot of Sensōji in the Meiji era was troubled by the tanuki in his garden. These creatures would often leave muddy paw prints on his tatami mats, much to his dismay. One night, a tanuki appeared in the abbot's dream, promising to protect the residence from fire and bring prosperity if a shrine was built in its honor. The abbot kept his word, and in 1883, the Chingodō (guardian shrine) was erected. To this day, people visit Chingodō to pray for protection from fire and to seek help in recovering lost items. Rakugo storytellers, kabuki actors, and other performers also visit the shrine to pray for success. The shrine serves as a reminder of the harmonious relationship between humans and nature, and the enduring power of folklore in Japanese culture.
