Shimogamo Shrine: A Journey Through Kyoto's Ancient Roots

Shimogamo Shrine, officially Kamo-mioya Jinja, stands as a testament to Kyoto's rich history and spiritual heritage. Dating back to the 6th century, and possibly even earlier with evidence of use as a ritual site 2,000 years ago, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers a serene escape into a world of ancient trees and sacred traditions. The shrine is dedicated to Kamo Taketsunumi no Mikoto and his daughter Tamayorihime no Mikoto, ancestors of the powerful Kamo clan who were the original inhabitants of the area. The most famous is the Aoi Matsuri, held annually on May 15th, a grand procession featuring people in Heian period costumes parading from the Kyoto Imperial Palace to the shrine. The Mitarashi Festival, held in midsummer, involves wading through the Mitarashi Pond to pray for good health.
