Discover more about Sammon Gate, Zenkōji temple

The Sammon Gate at Zenkōji Temple is more than just an entrance; it's a symbolic passage into a realm of peace and enlightenment. Constructed in the mid-Edo period, around 1750, this imposing wooden structure stands as a testament to traditional Japanese architecture and craftsmanship. As the most important gate of the Zenkōji Temple, it is part of the Zen shichidō garan, a group of buildings that forms the heart of a Zen Buddhist temple. Upon approaching the gate, visitors are greeted by its impressive size and elegant design. The two-storied Irimoya Zukuri style, with its hip-and-gable roof, showcases the architectural techniques of the time. Look closely at the plaque displaying the name “Zenkōji” (善光寺); five hidden pigeons are cleverly integrated into the calligraphy. This subtle detail adds an element of intrigue and is known as 'Hatoji no Gaku'. Some also say that the character for “Zen” resembles a cow's face, a reminder of the saying “Ushi ni HIkarete Zenkoji Mairi (牛に引かれて善光寺参り)”, referring to being unintentionally led to do good. For a small fee (600 yen), visitors can ascend to the second story of the Sammon Gate. Here, statues of Monju Bosatsu, the Bodhisattva of wisdom, and the Shitenno, the four heavenly kings, are enshrined. The vividly restored partition pictures for the altar room and alter Buddha statues from Shikoku's eighty-eight sacred places offer a glimpse into Buddhist artistry. The upper level also provides a panoramic view of the temple grounds, Nakamise-dori, and the surrounding city of Nagano. The Sammon Gate represents a symbolic transition. Pilgrims entering the gate can free themselves from greed, hatred and foolishness.
