Discover more about Chiba City Museum of Art

The Chiba City Museum of Art, which opened on November 3, 1995, is more than just an art museum; it's a cultural complex that integrates the city's history with contemporary artistic expression. The museum's design ingeniously wraps around the former Chiba branch of the Kawasaki Bank, a pre-war structure, symbolizing the preservation of history and its connection to future generations. This architectural approach was recognized in 1998 when the museum was selected as one of the “100 Best Public Buildings”. The museum's collection is built around three main themes: Japanese paintings and prints from the early modern to modern periods, contemporary art from 1945 onwards, and works related to Boso, particularly those from Chiba City. This diverse collection, comprising approximately 10,000 works, ensures a rich and varied experience for every visitor, with selections from the permanent collection rotating monthly. In July 2020, the museum was fully renovated to include a permanent exhibition room, an atelier for hands-on art projects, and an open-plan library with art-related books, enhancing opportunities for visitors of all ages to engage with art. Visitors can explore special exhibitions, participate in workshops and lectures, and enjoy the museum's facilities, including a library with 4,500 art-related books and a museum shop. The first floor houses the Cafe de Seizan and a museum store, while the 11th floor features Elegant Pavilion Seizan, offering local cuisine. The museum is committed to providing access to art for everyone, with barrier-free facilities and various events and workshops.
