Discover more about Kameido Tenjin Shrine

Kameido Tenjin Shrine, also known as Kameido Tenmangu or Tenjin-sama of Kameido, is a captivating Shinto shrine located in Tokyo's Koto ward. Founded in 1646 by a descendant of Sugawara no Michizane, a revered scholar and poet, the shrine is dedicated to Tenjin, the deity of learning. Modeled after the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Kyushu, it offers a serene escape with its meticulously designed grounds. The shrine is renowned for its seasonal floral displays, earning it the nickname "Flower Shrine". In February and March, the Plum Festival celebrates over 300 plum trees in bloom. From mid-April to early May, the Wisteria Festival showcases cascading wisteria trellises, creating a breathtaking spectacle. October brings the Chrysanthemum Festival, with vibrant chrysanthemum exhibitions. The shrine's landscape features a pond with vermilion arched bridges, stone lanterns, and a bronze statue of Sugawara no Michizane as a child. The three bridges symbolize the past, present, and future, inviting visitors to purify their hearts as they cross. A bronze "stroking cow" statue offers good fortune to those who touch it. Students often visit to pray for academic success, writing wishes on ema (wooden plaques). While the main shrine building was reconstructed after World War II, the shrine retains its historical charm and cultural significance. The grounds are open 24 hours, offering a peaceful retreat and a glimpse into traditional Japanese life.
