A Region of Seven Rivers

Zhetysu, meaning “Seven Rivers”, occupies south-eastern Kazakhstan between the great inland lakes of Balkhash and Alakol and the high ridges of the Dzungarian Alatau. The modern region, created in 2022 with Taldykorgan as its administrative centre, forms part of the wider historical landscape once known as Semirechye. Its geography changes dramatically across a broad territory: dry steppe and desert lie around the Ili and Balkhash basins, while river valleys, alpine meadows and snow-covered peaks rise towards the Chinese border.

Desert Landscapes and Mountain Valleys

The region’s best-known natural area is Altyn-Emel National Park, where the Singing Dune stands among vast gravel plains, sculpted sandstone hills and the pale Aktau and Katu-Tau ranges. The park also protects archaeological monuments including the Besshatyr burial mounds and supports wildlife adapted to arid country, such as kulan and goitered gazelle. Farther east, Lake Alakol attracts visitors to its mineral-rich waters, open shores and birdlife, while the Dzungarian Alatau offers a cooler landscape of forests, mountain streams and remote valleys.

Heritage Along Old Routes

Zhetysu has long been a meeting ground between Central Asian settled cultures, steppe pastoralists and trading communities travelling across routes linked with the Silk Road. Zharkent is known for its richly decorated wooden mosque, while Kapal and other older settlements preserve connections with the region’s imperial and agricultural past. Taldykorgan provides the most practical urban base for museums, services and onward journeys, although many of the region’s defining landscapes require a vehicle, preparation and several days to explore.

Getting to and around Zhetysu Region

How to get there

Taldykorgan is the principal urban gateway to Zhetysu and can be reached by road and rail from Almaty and other parts of Kazakhstan, although services and journey times vary. Almaty is generally the most useful international arrival point, with onward travel by train, coach, private vehicle or organised transfer. Altyn-Emel National Park is approached through settlements including Basshi, while the western shore of Lake Alakol is served by resort villages such as Akshi; these are not interchangeable bases, and journeys between them can be long. Check current schedules, road conditions and park access arrangements before departure.

Transportation

A car or arranged transfer is usually the most practical way to explore Zhetysu because its national parks, lakes, archaeological sites and mountain valleys are widely dispersed. Main roads connect Taldykorgan, Zharkent and other towns, but access roads in desert and mountain country may be rough, seasonal or unsuitable for ordinary cars. Public transport is more useful for reaching larger settlements than for visiting remote attractions. Within Altyn-Emel, travel should follow the park’s designated arrangements and routes. Independent hiking is possible in suitable areas, but visitors should not expect a continuous network of marked paths across the whole region.

Best attractions in Zhetysu Region

Altyn-Emel National Park is Zhetysu’s signature attraction, combining the resonant Singing Dune with the striped Aktau hills, volcanic-looking Katu-Tau formations, broad Ili Valley scenery and the Besshatyr kurgans. The park’s open habitats also support kulan, goitered gazelle and other steppe wildlife, though sightings are never guaranteed. Lake Alakol offers a contrasting experience on the region’s eastern side, with wide beaches, mineral-rich water and important bird habitats; seasonal resort settlements on the western shore provide the main visitor facilities. Nearby, the pale sedimentary folds of the Aktau Mountains and the dark, angular Katu-Tau formations create strong geological contrasts within the Ili Valley. Currency and Payment
Kazakhstan’s currency is the tenge, written KZT. Cards and contactless payments are commonly accepted in Taldykorgan, Zharkent and larger hotels or shops, but smaller settlements, roadside businesses, guesthouses and remote visitor facilities may rely on cash. Cash machines are more dependable in regional towns than in national parks or lakeside resort areas, so carrying a reasonable reserve of tenge is sensible before travelling into sparsely populated country. International cards, foreign-currency exchange and mobile connectivity should not be assumed to work consistently beyond the main towns.
Safety
Zhetysu combines long distances, desert exposure, mountain terrain and rapidly changing weather. Carry sufficient water, sun protection, warm layers and reliable navigation, and tell someone about plans when entering remote areas. Heat, dust, poor visibility, uneven ground and limited mobile coverage can complicate travel in Altyn-Emel and other isolated landscapes. Mountain roads may be affected by rain or snow, while conditions around Lake Alakol can change quickly. Keep a safe distance from wildlife, do not climb unstable formations or approach unprotected edges, and follow instructions from protected-area staff.
Emergency Situations
Kazakhstan’s unified emergency number is 112; visitors can also use 101 for fire, 102 for police and 103 for medical assistance. In a remote part of Zhetysu, provide the nearest settlement, road, river, mountain feature or park location when contacting responders, since a precise street address may not exist. Mobile coverage can be intermittent outside towns, so travel with charged phones, offline maps and a means of informing a trusted person of your itinerary. For serious medical problems, assistance and onward treatment may need to be arranged from a regional town.
Do's and Don'ts
Stay on authorised routes in national parks, do not touch or climb archaeological monuments, and take all rubbish away from desert, mountain and lakeside areas. Never feed wildlife or drive across fragile vegetation and archaeological ground. Give livestock, shepherds and local vehicles plenty of space, and ask before photographing people or entering private land. Dress practically and respectfully in villages and around religious buildings, including Zharkent Mosque. Treat water sources carefully, avoid leaving fires unattended and follow local advice on camping, fishing, boating and access restrictions rather than assuming an activity is permitted.
Local Tips
Taldykorgan is the most useful full-service base, while Basshi is convenient for exploring Altyn-Emel and Zharkent suits visits focused on the eastern lowlands and borderland heritage. Allow separate travel days for Altyn-Emel, Lake Alakol and the Dzungarian Alatau instead of treating them as nearby attractions. Early mornings and late afternoons are more comfortable for desert scenery and wildlife observation. Accommodation and food can become limited outside established settlements, so buy supplies before entering remote country. Spring and autumn often offer gentler temperatures, while summer is popular around Alakol but can be hot elsewhere.

History of Zhetysu Region

The Formation of a River-Land

The name Zhetysu, traditionally translated as “Seven Rivers”, refers to the fertile south-eastern landscape watered by rivers descending from the Tian Shan and Dzungarian Alatau towards the Ili and Balkhash basins. The wider historical region of Semirechye was never identical to the boundaries of the modern Zhetysu Region, but its geographical identity was shaped by the contrast between irrigated valleys, mountain pastures and arid steppe. Seasonal movement between these environments supported pastoral economies and encouraged settlement along river corridors long before the creation of modern administrative borders.

Saka and Steppe Archaeology

The Zhetysu landscape preserves important evidence of Iron Age cultures associated with the Saka peoples, whose pastoral and warrior societies occupied much of the Eurasian steppe. The Besshatyr burial complex in what is now Altyn-Emel National Park contains large kurgans, or burial mounds, together with associated stone features and memorial structures. These monuments demonstrate the ritual importance of the Ili Valley and provide a local connection to the wider archaeological tradition often linked with the “steppe golden man” discoveries of Kazakhstan.

Caravans, Forts and Borderlands

For centuries, routes crossing Zhetysu connected the oases and trading centres of Central Asia with the Chinese frontier and the steppe. The area was influenced by Turkic communities, the Dzungar Khanate and later the expanding Russian Empire, whose military and administrative presence altered patterns of settlement and land use in the nineteenth century. Zharkent developed as an important town near the Chinese border, and its distinctive mosque reflects the cultural interaction of Central Asian, Chinese and Russian-era influences. The region’s valleys also became increasingly important for settled agriculture and trade.

Soviet Transformation of the Landscape

During the Soviet period, Zhetysu was incorporated into large-scale agricultural, transport and settlement programmes that changed the relationship between communities and the steppe. Irrigation, collective farming and the expansion of towns brought new infrastructure, while traditional pastoral mobility was restricted and reshaped. Railways and roads connected the region more closely with Almaty and other parts of Kazakhstan, although its remote mountain and desert areas remained lightly settled. These twentieth-century changes are still visible in village layouts, cultivated river plains and abandoned or altered rural infrastructure.

Conservation and the Modern Region

Growing recognition of the ecological and archaeological value of the Ili Valley, desert ranges and mountain habitats led to the creation of protected areas, most notably Altyn-Emel National Park in 1996. Conservation now seeks to protect rare wildlife, fragile landforms and ancient monuments while allowing carefully managed tourism. The modern Zhetysu Region was established in 2022 after being separated from Almaty Region, giving the area a distinct administrative identity while retaining its older geographical associations with Semirechye.
