History of Green River Lake State Park

A River Valley Before the Reservoir

Before Green River Lake was created, the Green River flowed through a rural landscape of farms, woodland and small communities in south-central Kentucky. The river and its tributaries shaped settlement, transport and agriculture, while the surrounding uplands were used for pasture, crops and timber. Campbellsville, established in the early nineteenth century, developed nearby as a regional commercial centre. The area’s earlier history is therefore closely connected with ordinary rural land use rather than a single monumental site, and much of the modern visitor experience still reflects that relationship between water, forest and farmland.

The Green River Project

Green River Lake was developed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers as a flood-control and water-management project on the Green River. Construction of the dam and reservoir took place during the 1960s, with the lake becoming operational near the end of that decade. Creating the reservoir transformed the valley, inundating parts of the former river landscape and producing a long, irregular shoreline with numerous coves and inlets. The project also established a major recreational water body for central Kentucky, supplementing its engineering purpose with benefits for boating, fishing and public access.
