Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you are traveling by car, start your journey from Moshi, a popular base for Kilimanjaro climbers. Take the A23 road heading northwest towards Boma Ng'ombe. Continue on A23 until you reach the junction with the B2 road. Turn left onto B2 and follow it for about 80 kilometers, passing through towns like Makutano and Kabale. Once you reach the town of Mbale, follow the signs to Mount Elgon National Park. Be prepared for some winding roads and possibly rough terrain as you approach the park entrance.
Public Transportation
To reach Mount Elgon using public transportation, you can take a matatu (shared taxi) or bus from Moshi to Mbale. Head to the Moshi bus station and look for buses heading towards Mbale, which may take around 4 to 5 hours depending on traffic. Once you arrive in Mbale, you can hire a local taxi or a motorcycle taxi (boda-boda) to take you to the Mount Elgon National Park entrance. Ensure you negotiate the fare beforehand, which typically costs around 10,000 to 15,000 UGX (approximately $3 to $4 USD).
Taxi
For a more direct route to Mount Elgon, you can hire a taxi from Moshi to take you directly to the park entrance. This option may be more expensive, with fares ranging from 150,000 to 250,000 UGX (approximately $40 to $70 USD) depending on your negotiation skills and the distance covered. Ensure you agree on the fare before starting your journey. The taxi will take you through the scenic landscapes of the region and drop you off at the park entrance.
Use Mount Elgon as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
