Discover more about Old French Port Don Det

The Old French Port on Don Det Island stands as a historical landmark, quietly narrating the story of French colonial influence in Southeast Asia. Located on the tranquil Don Det in the Si Phan Don (4000 Islands) archipelago, this site offers more than just picturesque scenery; it provides a tangible connection to Laos' past. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the French sought to utilize the Mekong River as a trade route into China. The challenging rapids and waterfalls, however, posed a significant obstacle. To overcome this, a 7-kilometer narrow-gauge railway was constructed across Don Det and neighboring Don Khon, facilitating the transport of goods and passengers. The Old French Port on Don Det served as a crucial point in this operation. Here, specially designed vessels were dismantled, transported via the railway, and then reassembled to continue their journey upriver. Today, visitors can explore the remaining concrete infrastructure of the port, imagining the bustling activity that once defined this place. While the railway tracks are gone, the remnants offer a tangible link to the past. The port also provides stunning views across the Mekong, where you can see Cambodia. It's a tranquil spot for reflection, offering a blend of historical significance and natural beauty. Exploring the Old French Port is easily combined with other activities on Don Det, such as cycling around the island, kayaking on the Mekong, or simply enjoying the laid-back atmosphere.
