Discover more about Ban Xang Hai

Ban Xang Hai, often called the Whiskey Village, offers a captivating glimpse into rural Laotian life. Located a short distance from Luang Prabang, this village is best known for its production of Lao-Lao, the local rice whiskey. For centuries, the villagers have used traditional methods to ferment rice and distill it into a potent spirit. Visitors can witness this process firsthand, from the initial fermentation to the final distillation, and even sample the finished product. While whiskey production is central to Ban Xang Hai's identity, the village also has a rich history of pottery and weaving. Founded in 1363, Ban Xang Hai was once renowned for its pottery, with hundreds of kilns scattered throughout the area. Although pottery is no longer produced here, you can still see traces of this past. Today, weaving has become a prominent craft, with villagers creating beautiful silk and cotton textiles. Exploring Ban Xang Hai offers a chance to experience the slower pace of rural Laos. Wander through the village, observe the traditional wooden houses, and interact with the friendly locals. You can also find unique, handmade souvenirs, from textiles and bamboo items to, of course, bottles of Lao-Lao. Keep in mind that some vendors may display Lao-Lao infused with snakes and other animals, which is a traditional practice but may not appeal to all visitors. Ban Xang Hai is often combined with a visit to the nearby Pak Ou Caves, making it a convenient and culturally enriching excursion from Luang Prabang.
