Discover more about Pha That Luang Vientiane

Pha That Luang, or the Great Golden Stupa, is the most important national monument in Laos, representing both Buddhist faith and Lao sovereignty. Located about 4km northeast of Vientiane city center, its golden splendor is a sight to behold. Legend states that Ashokan missionaries from India erected a stupa here as early as the 3rd century BC to enclose a piece of Buddha's breastbone. The site has undergone numerous transformations over the centuries, initially serving as a Hindu temple before being rebuilt as a Khmer temple in the 13th century. In the 16th century, King Setthathirath moved the capital to Vientiane and ordered the construction of the current stupa, which was then covered in gold leaf. The stupa's architecture is deeply symbolic, with three levels representing the path to enlightenment. The first level symbolizes the underworld, the second represents the 30 perfections of Buddhist teaching, and the top tier signifies heaven or enlightenment. Surrounding the main stupa are dozens of smaller stupas, each adorned with Buddhist teachings. Visitors can also explore the statue of King Setthathirat and Wat Neua That Luang. Pha That Luang has suffered damage and been rebuilt multiple times due to wars and invasions. It was heavily damaged during the Siamese invasion in 1828 and later restored by the French in the 20th century. Today, Pha That Luang stands as a testament to Lao resilience and a symbol of national pride. Each year, the Boun That Luang festival is held during the full moon of the 12th lunar month (usually in November), attracting thousands of people for Buddhist ceremonies, parades, and festivities.
