Discover more about Aleksandra Vārti / Aleksandra Triumfa Arka

Aleksandra Vārti, or Alexander Gate, stands as a classical architectural monument within Riga's Viestura Garden. This triumphal arch, built between 1815 and 1817, echoes the style of ancient Roman arches and serves as a tribute to the Russian Empire's victory in the Napoleonic Wars. It specifically honors Emperor Alexander I. Originally, the gate was erected near what is now Brīvības iela (Freedom Street), close to the Air Bridge. As Riga expanded in 1904, the arch was relocated to Brīvības gatve near Šmerlis forest. For a time, it was renamed Zemitāna Vārti in 1928, honoring Colonel Zemitāns. In 1936, it found its current location in Viestura Garden. The arch is the only triumphal arch in Latvia named after a Russian Emperor. Its design reflects the classicism architectural style prevalent in the early 19th century, offering visitors a glimpse into the historical and political landscape of that era. Today, it serves as a landmark and a reminder of Riga's complex history.
