Monument to Dr. Ernst Von Bergmann

Born in Riga, von Bergmann revolutionized surgical practices by introducing heat sterilization of instruments and championing aseptic methods. His work significantly reduced post-operative infections and transformed the field of surgery.Von Bergmann's contributions extended beyond sterilization techniques. He made strides in cranial surgery, improved treatments for gunshot wounds, and pioneered procedures like hydrocelectomy. He served as a medical officer in several wars, gaining invaluable experience that informed his innovative approaches to wound care. He also advocated for well-trained nursing staff and updated procedures for handling injuries, especially those involving joints and the cranium.The building itself, located in the heart of Old Riga, adds to the historical charm of the area. Pils iela, known for its architectural significance, features buildings reflecting various styles, including Baroque, Renaissance, and Art Nouveau. A plaque was placed on his birth house in 2011 by the Hans-Neuffer Foundation.
