Discover more about Aleksandra Vārti / Aleksandra Triumfa Arka

The Aleksandra Triumfa Arka, also known as the Alexander Triumph Arch, is a striking monument located in Viesturdārzs park in Riga. Constructed between 1815 and 1817, the arch commemorates the Russian Empire's victory in the Napoleonic Wars. It is named after Emperor Alexander I and stands as Latvia's sole triumphal arch. Designed in the style of Roman triumphal arches, the monument features four Ionic columns and bronze medallions adorned with symbols of peace and war. Originally, the arch stood at the end of Aleksandra iela (now Brīvības iela) near the Gaisa Tilts (Air Bridge). However, due to expanding city infrastructure, it was moved several times. In 1904, it was relocated to the intersection of Brīvības and Šmerļa streets and in 1936, it was finally moved to its current location in Viesturdārzs park. Today, the Aleksandra Triumfa Arka serves as a reminder of Riga's rich history and architectural heritage. Visitors can admire the arch's design, explore the surrounding park, and reflect on the historical events it represents.
