How to get there

International visitors usually reach Kurzeme through Riga, outside the region, whose airport and central railway and coach connections provide the principal national gateway. Liepāja has an airport within Kurzeme, though air services are limited and subject to change. Regional trains connect Riga with Tukums and onward routes serve parts of the western corridor, while coaches are important for Liepāja, Ventspils, Kuldīga, Talsi and other towns. A car is the most flexible option for reaching remote beaches, Cape Kolka, Slītere National Park and Pape Nature Park.

Transportation

Liepāja and Ventspils have urban bus networks, and intercity coaches link the main towns, but rural services can be infrequent, particularly outside summer. Rail is useful on the Riga–Tukums–Liepāja corridor where available, but it does not reach every major Kurzeme destination. Kurzeme uses the euro, as does Latvia as a whole; the currency code is EUR. Cards and contactless payments are widely accepted in Liepāja, Ventspils, Kuldīga, hotels, supermarkets and established restaurants. Safety
Kurzeme is generally straightforward for visitors, but normal precautions apply in ports, transport areas and busy summer locations. On the coast, cold water, strong winds, unstable dunes and changing sea conditions can create genuine hazards; follow warnings and avoid swimming in rough weather. Forest and wetland paths may be slippery, and ticks are present in Latvia, so check clothing and skin after walking. Drivers should expect dark rural roads, cyclists, wildlife and variable surfaces, especially away from the main towns.

Do's and Don'ts
Keep to marked paths in Slītere National Park, Pape Nature Park and other protected areas, and take litter away when facilities are limited. Do not enter military or industrial sites unless access is clearly authorised, particularly around former and current port zones. In churches and memorial sites, dress and behave respectfully; Latvian public transport etiquette is generally quiet and orderly. Tipping is discretionary rather than compulsory, although rounding up or adding a modest amount for good restaurant service is customary. Ask before photographing people, private homes or working harbour activity.
Local Tips
Plan coastal journeys around daylight and bus connections, as villages north and south of the main cities have limited evening services. Kuldīga makes a useful inland base for exploring the Venta valley, while Liepāja and Ventspils offer the broadest choice of accommodation and dining. Birdwatchers should allow extra time at Pape and the northern coast during migration seasons. Weather can change quickly beside the Baltic, so pack a waterproof layer even in summer, and expect some museums and cafés to operate on reduced schedules outside the main season.

History of Kurzeme

Ancient Courland and Livonian Coastal Communities

Western Latvia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and archaeological evidence records settlements, burial sites and trading activity around its rivers and coast. The northern shore was associated particularly with the Livonian people, whose language and cultural traditions survived in several fishing villages. Courland’s position between the Baltic Sea and the inland waterways made the area a meeting place for Baltic, Finnic, Germanic and Scandinavian influences. Archaeological sites and local museums provide the clearest ways to understand this early history, although much of the region’s oldest settlement pattern is now visible only through the landscape.

The Livonian Order and Medieval Towns

During the Middle Ages, western Latvia became part of the territories controlled by the Livonian Order and the bishoprics of Livonia. Castles, churches and trading settlements developed along routes linking the coast with inland markets. Kuldīga emerged as an important centre beside the Venta River, while coastal ports supported commerce and military movement across the Baltic. The medieval legacy was later altered by war and reconstruction, but the region’s historic churches, town plans and surviving masonry still reflect the political and economic importance of Courland within medieval Livonia.

The Duchy of Courland and Semigallia, 1561–1795

After the Livonian state broke apart in the sixteenth century, much of present-day Kurzeme formed the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia under the Kettler dynasty and its successors. Kuldīga served as an important ducal residence, and Jelgava became the principal political centre outside modern Kurzeme. Duke Jacob Kettler promoted manufacturing, shipbuilding and overseas trade, giving the small duchy connections that extended beyond the Baltic. The period left a durable regional identity centred on Courland, even after the duchy was incorporated into the Russian Empire in 1795.

Ports, Maritime Trade and Industrial Growth

From the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries onwards, ports such as Liepāja and Ventspils became increasingly important to the region’s economy. Grain, timber and other agricultural or forest products moved through the harbours, while rail connections strengthened links with inland Latvia and the wider Russian Empire. Liepāja developed into an industrial and commercial city with distinctive masonry and wooden architecture; Ventspils grew around its port and maritime functions. Fishing, shipbuilding, forestry and agriculture remained equally important across the smaller towns and rural districts.

War, Independence and the Interwar Republic

Kurzeme was heavily affected by the First World War, the Latvian War of Independence and the upheavals accompanying the collapse of the Russian Empire. Liepāja briefly served as a temporary centre of the Latvian government during the struggle for independence, and the western coast became strategically important because of its ports. During Latvia’s interwar independence, towns expanded civic institutions, schools and cultural life, while agriculture and maritime trade continued to shape the countryside. Several urban buildings and monuments date from this period of national statehood.

Occupation, Soviet Rule and the Contemporary Region

Latvia’s occupation during the Second World War and subsequent incorporation into the Soviet Union transformed Kurzeme. Military installations expanded, coastal access was restricted in many areas and industrial activity was reorganised under Soviet administration. Karosta in Liepāja preserves especially visible evidence of this military past, while rural communities experienced depopulation and economic change. Since the restoration of Latvian independence in 1991, ports, tourism, conservation and cultural heritage have become important parts of the regional economy. Historic centres such as Kuldīga now sit alongside modern coastal industries and protected natural areas.
