Discover more about Aleksandra Vārti / Aleksandra Triumfa Arka

The Alexander Gate, or Aleksandra Vārti, is a notable landmark in Riga, Latvia, representing a significant piece of the city's history and architectural heritage. This classical monument, inspired by Roman triumphal arches, was constructed from 1815 to 1817 to honor the Russian Empire's victory in the Napoleonic Wars and to recognize the merits of its Emperor Alexander I. Originally, the Alexander Gate was located on Brīvības iela (Freedom Street), near the Air Bridge. However, as the city expanded, it was moved in 1904 to a section of Brīvības gatve near Šmerlis. In 1928, it was renamed Zemitāna vārti after Colonel Zemitāns, and in 1936, it was finally relocated to its current location in Viestura Garden. Viestura Garden itself is the oldest park in Riga and a historically significant location. It is known as the place where the tradition of the Latvian Song Festival began in 1873. Today, the Alexander Gate stands as the only triumphal arch in Latvia, a testament to a bygone era and a reminder of the city's rich and complex past. In 2018, the arch underwent restoration, which included cleaning, plaster renewal, metal medallion restoration, and foundation strengthening.
