Discover more about Bastejkalna Park

Bastejkalna Park, also known as Bastion Hill Park, is a spacious and scenic park located on the eastern edge of Riga's Old Town. This green sanctuary has been a part of Riga's urban landscape since the early 19th century, developed as part of the city's beautification efforts. Originally, the area was part of Riga's fortification system, with earthen ramparts, trenches, and bastions. In 1856, the ramparts were demolished, and the area was transformed into the park we see today. The park features winding pathways, vibrant flower beds, and towering trees, creating a serene atmosphere for leisurely walks and relaxation. A picturesque canal meanders through the park, crossed by charming bridges adorned with love locks. Visitors can rent a pedal boat to enjoy the canal from a different perspective. A waterfall cascade, built in 1898 using dolomite from Saulkalne, adds to the park's beauty. Bastejkalna Park is also home to several monuments and sculptures. The Freedom Monument, a key national symbol of Latvia, stands near the park's edge. Other notable monuments include those dedicated to Krišjānis Barons, victims of the 1991 OMON deployment, and former Riga Mayor George Armitstead. The park provides a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city, making it a popular spot for locals and tourists.
