4.6

Salaspils Pludmale, located on the banks of the Daugava River, is a well-maintained recreational area perfect for a relaxing day outdoors. The beach provides a picturesque setting for various activities, including sunbathing, swimming, and picnicking. Visitors can enjoy several amenities, such as picnic tables, benches, and fire pits, making it ideal for gatherings with friends and family. For those seeking active recreation, there are outdoor exercise machines and playgrounds for children. During the swimming season, a lifeguard station is available. Historically, the area around Salaspils has been inhabited for thousands of years. In approximately 1380, a church dedicated to St. George, the spiritual protector of Livonia, was constructed in this area. Although the church was destroyed multiple times in wars and rebuilt, it was eventually left unattended after World War II. In 1973, during the construction of the Riga Hydroelectric Power Plant, the remains of the church were demolished. However, the ruins remained outside the flooded zone and were recognized as a local architectural monument three years later; they can still be viewed today.
