The National Botanic Garden in Salaspils was founded in 1956, but its origins can be traced back to the 18th century. The garden's main tasks include research in botany, ornamental horticulture, creation of greenery, plant introduction, genetics, selection, as well as popularization of research. In 1968, the garden was granted the status of a research institute. The new conservatory complex of the National Botanical Garden was opened on April 23, 2015. It features plants from around the world. The area of the botanical garden is 129 hectares, thus it is the largest botanical garden in Latvia. The conservatory is split into four halls – the Succulent Hall, the Tropical Hall, the Humid Subtropical Hall and Cool Subtropical Hall. Everyone is welcome here to learn about the diversity of plants in Latvia and around the world in a harmonious environment, as well as to get inspiration for their own gardens, linking leisure with environmental education. Children will love exploring the various plant species and learning about their origins and importance in the ecosystem. With ample seating areas and picnic spots, it's also a fantastic place to spend a leisurely afternoon surrounded by the beauty of nature.
