Discover more about Hängebrücke über die Argen

Spanning the Argen River between Kressbronn and Langenargen, the Hängebrücke über die Argen stands as a testament to late 19th-century engineering. Constructed between 1896 and 1897, this suspension bridge replaced an earlier, less reliable crossing. Before its construction, crossing the Argen required a lengthy detour, making the new bridge a vital improvement to regional infrastructure. The bridge's design, inspired by the iron Danube bridge in Budapest, was led by Karl von Leibbrand and executed by the Maschinenfabrik Esslingen. Its construction was a marvel for its time, notable for having no supporting pillars in the riverbed, which helped to prevent damage from floods. The bridge is 72 meters long and 6.2 meters wide. The cables are 130 meters long and supported by two elaborately designed pylons at the ends of the bridge. While originally built to accommodate vehicular traffic, the bridge now serves pedestrians and cyclists. A new bridge was constructed nearby in 1978 to accommodate heavier traffic. The Hängebrücke über die Argen provides a unique vantage point for enjoying the natural beauty of the Argen Valley.
