Discover more about Flims

Flims, a charming municipality in the Imboden Region of Switzerland, beckons travelers with its breathtaking alpine scenery and a rich history dating back to the Bronze Age. First mentioned in 765 as 'Fleme,' the village's name likely originates from the Latin word 'fluminae,' meaning 'many streams,' a nod to the numerous waterways that meander through the landscape. In the 19th century, Flims blossomed into a popular health resort, attracting visitors seeking the restorative benefits of its pristine mountain air and stunning surroundings. The opening of the Park Hotel in 1877 marked the beginning of tourism in Flims, transforming the once-quiet village into a sought-after destination. Today, Flims is part of the Weisse Arena, a renowned winter sports area that includes the neighboring villages of Laax and Falera. Flims offers a plethora of activities for every season. In winter, the slopes of Crap Sogn Gion come alive with skiers and snowboarders, while cross-country skiers and winter hikers explore the snowy trails. Summer transforms the landscape into a verdant playground for hikers, bikers, and water sports enthusiasts. The jewel in Flims' crown is undoubtedly Lake Cauma, a stunning turquoise lake fed by underground springs. Its inviting waters and picturesque setting make it a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxation. Another must-see attraction is the Rhine Gorge, often referred to as the 'Swiss Grand Canyon'. This dramatic gorge, carved by the Vorderrhein River, offers breathtaking views and thrilling opportunities for rafting and canoeing. For those seeking a bird's-eye view, paragliding and skydiving offer unforgettable experiences. Flims is also known for its unique architecture, particularly the works of Rudolf Olgiati, who blended international styles with traditional Swiss designs.
