3.7

The Grossratsgebäude, located at Masanserstrasse 3 in Chur, is the meeting place for the Grosser Rat, the parliamentary legislative body of Graubünden. Situated just north of the Old Town, near the Theater Chur, the building has a rich history. Initially, the building served as an armory, constructed between 1861 and 1863. Designed by architect Johannes Ludwig in the Neo-Renaissance style, the structure's architecture is characterized by rounded arches. In 1959, architect Martin Risch oversaw the building's conversion into a dual-purpose facility, housing both the Theater Chur and the parliament. In 2008 and 2009, the entrance underwent a redesign by architects Valerio Olgiati and Tamara Olgiati. The redesign, costing 670,000 Swiss Francs, involved creating a new entrance area. The Grossratsaal (Grand Council Chamber) features 40 coats of arms representing the 39 municipalities of Graubünden and the cantonal coat of arms, created in 1960 by Giuseppe Scartezzini.
