Discover more about Herz Jesu

The Herz Jesu Church, located in Bregenz, is a stunning example of neo-Gothic architecture. Constructed between 1905 and 1912, the church's design was conceived by the Stuttgart architect Joseph Cades. The church was built following the decision by the citizens of Bregenz to establish a fund for a church dedicated to the Sacred Heart, inspired by the centenary of the Tyrolean consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The church features a cruciform layout with a three-nave basilica and two prominent spires that reach a height of 62 meters. The double-tower facade, reminiscent of Norman architecture, is a distinctive feature. Inside, the clerestory, almost twice the height of the side aisles, allows natural light to flood the central nave through tripartite windows. The interior is adorned with stained glass windows and religious artworks. The church's organ, built between 1928 and 1931 by Josef Behmann, is a significant feature, boasting 53 registers and 4,650 pipes. It is considered a high-ranking sound monument and a cultural heritage site of Vorarlberg. The largest bell, the Herz-Jesu Bell, weighs 5,270 kg and is considered a masterpiece of post-war bell casting. Over the years, Herz Jesu Church has undergone several renovations, including a renovation of the church square and stairs in 1969 and restoration of the organ in 1994. In 1958, it became an independent parish. Today, the Herz Jesu Church is not only a place of worship but also a beacon of architectural brilliance and historical significance, inviting visitors to explore its serene ambiance and immerse themselves in the local culture. The church offers regular services and events.
