Discover more about Lindauer Marionettenoper

The Lindauer Marionettenoper, founded in 2000 by Bernhard Leismüller, is a captivating jewel nestled within the Stadttheater Lindau. This unique opera house stages full-scale operas using meticulously crafted marionettes, offering a truly enchanting experience. Leismüller himself has created over 450 puppets, and the ensemble includes 14 puppeteers. The opera house is located in the former concert hall of the Barfüßerkirche, a building with a rich history dating back to the 13th century. The Stadttheater itself is a historically significant building, being Germany's first listed theater after World War II. The marionette opera's stage is inspired by historical examples of each opera, with passion, costumes and stage settings carefully designed. The movements of the puppets are inspired by the musical score, with every detail choreographed. A visit to the Lindauer Marionettenoper is a special experience. The ensemble's repertoire is aimed mainly at an adult audience and includes operas, operettas, ballets and plays. The theater has a capacity of approximately 100 seats, which are often booked well in advance. After each performance, visitors can go backstage to see the marionettes and learn how they are operated. Over 20 people work for the Marionettenoper, and there is even a friends' association with over 200 members. The Lindauer Marionettenoper is the only stage in Germany dedicated exclusively to musical theater.
