4.4

Located in the heart of Chur, the Reformierte Martinskirche stands as a testament to the city's rich history and architectural evolution. Originally built in the 8th century, the church has undergone several transformations, resulting in its unique blend of Romanesque and Gothic elements. The church's origins can be traced back to around 769 AD when it was first mentioned in historical documents as a donation by Bishop Tello. Archaeological evidence suggests that Christian worship sites may have existed on this location as early as the 5th century. The current structure largely dates back to the late 13th century (Romanesque nave and western tower) and mid-15th century (Gothic choir and sacristy). In 1523, Chur embraced the Reformation, and St. Martin's Church became a central part of the Reformed tradition. The church's architecture is a captivating mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The exterior features robust stone walls and round-arched windows characteristic of the Romanesque period, while pointed arch windows reflect Gothic influences. The imposing bell tower, standing at approximately 22 meters, adds to the structure's majesty. Inside, visitors can admire stunning frescoes from the medieval and Renaissance eras, stained glass windows, and carved wooden choir stalls. The church organ, installed in 1978, is a magnificent instrument with 30 stops spread over two manuals and a pedalboard. The churchyard provides a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The Reformierte Martinskirche is more than just a religious site; it's a focal point for cultural gatherings and community events.
