The Waaghaus, a prominent building in St. Gallen's old town, has a rich history dating back to its construction between 1584 and 1585. Originally, it served as a multifunctional trade hall where goods were weighed, taxed, and stored, playing a vital role in the city's bustling trade activities. The name 'Waaghaus' comes from the German word 'Waag,' meaning scale, reflecting its original purpose. Over the centuries, the Waaghaus adapted to the changing needs of the city. By the 19th century, with the advent of the railway and new customs warehouses, its original function became obsolete. It briefly housed the police station before transforming into a post office in 1876, a role it maintained until 1958. A public vote in 1958 ensured its preservation and renovation, leading to its current form. Today, the Waaghaus is a vibrant cultural hub hosting various events throughout the year. The open ground floor, once used for weighing and trading goods, now serves as a venue for markets and public gatherings. During the festive season, it becomes a magical setting for Christmas markets. The upper floor is divided into two sections: the eastern part is a versatile space for exhibitions and concerts, while the western part houses the council chamber for the St. Gallen city parliament. The Waaghaus has several striking architectural features. The large entrance gates on the ground floor, originally designed for carts, now provide access to events. The exterior features a clock with a moon phase indicator and a roof turret with an onion dome, salvaged from the old town hall. The building stands at the eastern end of the market square, marking the entrance to the Brühltor and Rorschacherstrasse.
