If you are starting from the Old Port area of downtown Portland, head east on Fore Street towards the eastern waterfront. Continue straight until you reach the intersection with Commercial Street. Turn left onto Commercial Street and walk along the waterfront until you reach the ferry terminal. From there, you can take a ferry to Peaks Island, which is the closest access point to Fort Gorges. Keep in mind that the ferry schedule varies, so check the schedule ahead of time for return trips.

Start at the Portland Transportation Center. Take the Metro Bus Route 1 towards the Maine Mall. Get off at the stop near the Eastern Promenade and walk towards the waterfront. From the Eastern Promenade, take the path that leads to the ferry terminal where you can catch a ferry to Peaks Island. Again, be sure to check the ferry schedule for your return trip.

If you prefer biking, rent a bike from one of the local rental shops in downtown Portland. Head towards the Eastern Promenade Trail, which offers scenic views of Casco Bay. Follow the trail down to the waterfront and then head to the ferry terminal. Once you reach Peaks Island, you can bike around the island to find the paths leading to Fort Gorges. Remember to lock your bike securely at the ferry terminal before your visit.
