Currency and Payment
Malaysia uses the Malaysian ringgit, abbreviated MYR or RM. History of Genting Highlands

Upland Forest and Early Communities

Before the resort was developed, the upper slopes of the Titiwangsa Range were covered largely by tropical forest and were used within a wider landscape known to Orang Asli communities. The ridges around present-day Genting Highlands formed part of the mountainous interior between Selangor and Pahang, with access shaped by steep terrain, forest conditions and the absence of a sizeable urban settlement. The cool, wet upland environment later attracted attention as a possible retreat from the heat of the lowlands, but the area remained remote compared with Kuala Lumpur and the towns of western Pahang.

Lim Goh Tong’s Highland Vision

The modern history of Genting Highlands is closely associated with Malaysian businessman Lim Goh Tong, who proposed developing a mountain resort in the 1960s. Construction involved creating road access and building on difficult highland terrain, linking the project more effectively with Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding lowlands. The resort was named Genting Highlands and developed as a destination combining accommodation, leisure facilities and entertainment at altitude. Its growth transformed an isolated forested hill area into one of Malaysia’s most recognisable resort landscapes, while also creating employment and new settlements around the access routes.

The Resort Takes Shape

The first hotel and resort facilities opened in the early 1970s, establishing Genting Highlands as a mountain escape within reach of the capital. Chin Swee Caves Temple

Its buildings, statues and landscaped grounds introduced a significant religious and cultural landmark to the resort environment.
