History of Selangor

Selangor's history dates back to the 16th century when it was founded by the Bugis, a seafaring people from Sulawesi, Indonesia. The Bugis settlers established the first Sultanate of Selangor, which became a prominent trading hub due to its strategic location along the Malacca Strait.
In the 19th century, Selangor was the site of the Klang War (1867-1874), a conflict between rival factions vying for control over the rich tin mines in the region. The war ultimately led to British intervention and the establishment of British colonial rule in Selangor.
Following the Klang War, Selangor became part of the Federated Malay States under British colonial administration in 1896. The British brought infrastructure development, including the construction of railways, roads, and the establishment of Kuala Lumpur as the capital of Selangor and later the capital of Malaysia.
During World War II, Selangor, like the rest of Malaya, was occupied by Japanese forces from 1942 to 1945. The occupation was a challenging period marked by economic hardship and resistance movements. After the war, British control was reinstated until Malaya achieved independence in 1957.
After gaining independence in 1957, Selangor underwent rapid development and urbanization. Kuala Lumpur, which was part of Selangor, became the epicenter of Malaysia's economic growth. In 1974, Kuala Lumpur was separated from Selangor to become a Federal Territory, but Selangor continued to thrive as an economic powerhouse.
