Discover more about Auberge de Castille et Portugal

The Auberge de Castille et Portugal in Birgu, also known as Vittoriosa, stands as a reminder of Malta's rich history. This auberge was built to house the Knights of the Order of Saint John from the Langues of Castille, León, and Portugal. The first Auberge de Castille was built in the 1530s, but its location is not known. During the reign of Grand Master Claude de la Sengle, a new Auberge de Castille and Portugal was constructed. Designed by architect Niccolò Bellavante in the traditional Maltese style, it served this purpose until the Knights moved to Valletta in 1571. Today, the building is a private residence, and only a quoin and some windows with Melitan mouldings remain of the original structure. Despite the alterations, the Auberge de Castille et Portugal remains a significant landmark, included on the Antiquities List of 1925 and scheduled as a Grade 1 national monument in 2009. While not as grand as the Auberge de Castille in Valletta, it offers a tangible connection to Birgu's time as the capital of Malta and the Knights' influence.
