Discover more about Church of Our Lady of Victory

The Church of Our Lady of Victory stands as a testament to Malta's rich history and the enduring faith of its people. Completed in 1566, it was the first building in Valletta, constructed to commemorate the victory of the Knights of St. John over the Ottoman Empire during the Great Siege of 1565. Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette personally funded the church as an expression of gratitude. Legend says that the Virgin Mary appeared to the Turkish soldiers, frightening them into retreat and securing the Maltese victory. The church was built on the site where a religious ceremony inaugurated the laying of Valletta's foundation stone on March 28, 1566. Originally known as Saint Anthony the Abbot Church, it became the parish church of the Order of St John in 1617. The church's architecture has evolved over the centuries. In 1699, the apse was enlarged, and in 1716, Maltese artist Alessio Erardi was commissioned to paint the vault with scenes from the Life of the Virgin. These stunning frescoes, along with other artistic treasures, adorn the interior. The façade, sacristy, belfry, and parish priest's house were enlarged in 1752, giving the façade a Baroque appearance, including a bronze bust of Pope Innocent XII. Inside, visitors can admire paintings brought to Malta by the Knights of St John, as well as works by Maltese artist Francesco Zahra. The church also houses the heart of Grand Admiral Angelo Emo, who died in Malta in 1792. Despite damages sustained during air raids in World War II, the church has been lovingly restored. Since 2011, Din l-Art Ħelwa, the National Trust of Malta, has been entrusted with its management and restoration. Today, the Church of Our Lady of Victory is a cherished landmark, hosting religious services and events. Visitors can explore its tranquil surroundings, admire its artistic treasures, and connect with Malta's pivotal history.
