Discover more about Casa Bernard

Step back in time at Casa Bernard, a meticulously restored 16th-century palazzo in the heart of Rabat. This isn't just a museum; it's a living testament to Maltese aristocratic life, offering an intimate glimpse into the history and traditions of a noble family.Originally built as a medieval watchtower on Roman foundations, Casa Bernard gradually transformed into the elegant palazzo you see today. The house is named after Dr. Salvatore Bernard, a French physician who served the Grand Master of Malta in 1723. The Bernard family, who were doctors, resided in the house until the second quarter of the 20th century. In 1993, the current owners, Mr. and Mrs. Magri, acquired the property and embarked on an extensive restoration project to revive its former splendor.A guided tour, often conducted by the owners themselves, takes you through the palazzo's many rooms, including the barrel-vaulted hallway, family chapel, dining room, drawing rooms, library and master bedroom. Each room is filled with carefully chosen furniture, paintings, and objets d'art, each with its own story to tell. The tour concludes with a stroll through the courtyard and garden, offering a tranquil escape. Casa Bernard won an award from Europa Nostra in 2006 for its splendid restoration.
